About Margaret (Meg) Wagner

Margaret (Meg) Wagner (1940-2023) was a volunteer braille transcriber and instructor for 50 years. She enrolled in a transcriber course run by the Pinellas Braille Group of Pasadena Florida in 1973, having previously taught herself braille so she could write to a blind friend after they graduated from Emory University. Meg received her literary certification in 1975, an event commemorated by an opal and diamond ring given to her by her husband. She later became certified in Nemeth code and then in UEB, teaching many courses and mentoring transcribers in Pinellas County and elsewhere across the state. She joined NBA a few years later and served on the Board of Directors from 1979 to 1985 and became Chair of the NBA Fund Development Committee and then Treasurer of the Board's Executive Committee. She became a Lifetime Member of NBA in 1980.

The Margaret (Meg) Wagner Fund and the Guiding Light Award for Devotion (G.L.A.D.)

Friends and family of Meg Wagner have donated to a fund at the NBA called “The Meg Wagner Fund”. It is to provide an annual award in her memory to honor someone who exemplifies many of Meg’s priorities: participating in braille organizations, transcribing STEM materials, mentoring those learning to transcribe including vision teachers and inmates, pioneering the use of new technologies, volunteering transcription work to support her local community, and having a passion to continue learning and helping until the end of her days. The award, called the 'Guiding Light Award for Devotion' or G.L.A.D., will include NBA Life Membership status and free conference registration (the latter must be used within five years of receiving the award), along with meaningful recognition. When considering applying for the award, keep in mind that:

  • Except for current Life Members of the NBA, anyone can apply for the award. One does not need to be a current regular member of the NBA.
  • To be eligible, one does not need to have the same level of success or influence on the industry that Meg did, but one does need to have similar interests and the same level of devotion.
