Prison Braille Program

In January of 2021, the National Braille Association (NBA) launched its Prison Braille Program. In an effort to support ALL braille transcribers, the goal of this program is to ensure NBA resources are accessible to those currently working from behind the walls of a correctional institution.

Many transcribers working within prison braille groups don’t have access to the internet. Prior to the Prison Braille Program, this limitation would have prevented them from accessing many of NBA’s resources. By utilizing an alternative method of service delivery, the Prison Braille Program provides a way for prison braille groups to access all NBA has to offer.

Pricing

We’ve developed a tiered pricing system for our Prison Braille Program. This model allows us to deliver an equitable package of benefits to all programs regardless of their size.

Benefits Outline

Groups who enroll in NBA's Prison Braille Program must adhere to the rules and guidelines outlined by the tier they are registered in. The Group Administrator is responsible for monitoring compliance. NBA reserves the right to relinquish a group's enrollment if these rules and guidelines are violated in any way.

Ask An Expert

Enrolled groups are able to utilize NBA's technical forum called Ask An Expert. This is made possible by allowing the Group Administrator to post questions on behalf of the group they represent. An Administrator can also share all of the content found on Ask An Expert. This can be done in one of two ways.

An Administrator can reproduce printouts of the content or save it in an electronic repository. If the latter, the program must have the ability to limit the number of individuals who can access the repository to the number determined by the tier they're enrolled in. The Group Administrator must add the phrase, “Copyright National Braille Association,” in the footer of each page of content before it is shared. Regardless of the medium that is selected for sharing, no modifications to NBA's content can be made.

Bulletin

A subscription to NBA's professional journal, the Bulletin, is included in the cost of enrollment. The Group Administrator receives the monthly delivery of any materials published that month. If a Bulletin was published that month, a PDF and a BRF will be included in that folder. The Bulletin can then be shared with the group in one of two ways. An Administrator can reproduce hard copy printouts in the amount determined by their subscription tier or save the files in an electronic repository. If the latter, the program must have the ability to limit the number of individuals who can access the repository to the number determined by their subscription tier.

Conferences

Registration

A group enrolled in the Prison Braille Program is entitled to register one individual per NBA conference at the member rate. Any additional registrant from that program will be required to pay the non-member fee or utilize the benefits of their own individual membership (if they have one).

Materials

The conference workshop materials provided to the group's representative (i.e. the single individual who received the membership rate on registration) can be shared with the rest of the group. This can be done by making hard copies of the material in the amount determined by their enrolled tier or by sharing it digitally in an electronic repository. If shared electronically, the group must have the ability to limit the number of individuals who can view the content to no more than the number determined by their enrolled tier. No modifications to hardcopy or electronic materials are allowed.

Webinars

Groups who enroll in the program are provided with access to the recordings of all NBA's webinars. When a group first enrolls, they will be sent a link to a folder that includes all of the recorded videos to date. After that, they will receive files on a monthly basis. Any program wishing to purchase paid training videos who doesn't have the ability to download them, may request that they be sent in the same manner as the monthly materials.

Publications

Publications An enrolled group may purchase an unlimited number of NBA publications at the member rate. The Group Administrator must be logged into their online account before making a purchase for this benefit to be applied. If a group purchases an electronic file, that file may be printed or saved in an electronic repository. If printed, copies can be made in the amount determined by their enrolled tier. If saved in an electronic repository, the group must have the ability to limit the number of individuals who can view the content to no more than what is determined by the tier they're enrolled in. No modifications to hardcopy or electronic materials are allowed.

Enrollment

To qualify for enrollment, a group must be operating from within a correctional institutional. The group must also be able to identify a single point of contact. This contact, referred to as the Group Administrator, serves as the liaison between NBA and the rest of the group.

The Group Administrator is provided with access to the same online benefits as an NBA Member. This allows the Administrator to act as a conduit for the transcribers who are unable to access those benefits themselves. The Administrator also has the authority to receive, reproduce, and distribute the group benefits that are delivered on a monthly basis.

The annual cost to enroll in NBA’s Prison Braille Program is is based on a tiered system determined by the number of individuals in your program. Benefits begin on the day a payment or purchase order is received. A group will be sent a renewal invoice approximately one month prior to the expiration of their enrollment period.
