Training

Since its inception in 1945 the National Braille Association has been dedicated to the pursuit of training transcribers to produce high quality braille. In the 80 years since our founding, technology has evolved and we’ve tried to do exactly the same. As an organization, we’ve worked hard to develop an array of tools and opportunities for braille transcribers to receive training.

Professional Development Conference

Each year we come together for three-days of intense professional development training at our annual conference. Transcribers, teachers of the visually impaired, prison braille program managers, and others from around North America gather in person for workshops lead by experienced transcribers, accessibility experts, and other professionals.

NBA’s Professional Development Conference is held in a different city each year.

Training Bureau

We know there might be hurdles to sending your entire team of transcribers to our conference so we designed the Training Bureau in response to that need. If your team is looking for a trainer to visit your facility, we can do exactly that! NBA’s team of experts can tailor a training specifically to your needs. Whether it’s one day of Tactile Graphics training or three-days of Braille Formats, our trainers can design an educational program just for you and travel to present live right in your facility.

Self-Study

The National Braille Association has been developing materials for over 80-years and delivering them to individuals all over the world. We’ve loaded up the member’s section of our website with training tools like the Bulletin featuring technical articles from different skills areas, training videos from the hundreds of online webinars we’ve produced, and more!

Prison Braille Program

Many transcribers working within prison braille groups don’t have access to the internet. Prior to the Prison Braille Program, this limitation would have prevented them from accessing many of NBA’s resources. By utilizing an alternative method of service delivery, the Prison Braille Program provides a way for prison braille groups to access all NBA has to offer.
