Our Mission

The National Braille Association (NBA) is a member-supported nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing excellence in braille. Founded in 1945, NBA has served the braille community for more than 80 years through education, professional development, and technical support.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide continuing education to those who prepare braille and to provide braille materials to persons who are visually impaired.

About

We fulfill our mission by providing continuing education, professional development, and technical support for those who prepare braille materials. Through our programs and services, members can strengthen their skills, stay current with evolving standards, and connect with a network of experienced professionals.

Membership benefits include:

  • The Bulletin, our quarterly peer-reviewed journal featuring articles from experts across braille transcription and accessibility fields.
  • An archive of recorded webinars covering a wide range of braille-related topics.
  • Ask An Expert, an online forum where members can receive guidance and support from experienced practitioners.
  • Continuous access to our eLearning resources in the Learning Management System
  • Opportunities to connect with colleagues and learn from leaders in the field.

NBA also offers annual professional development conferences, instructional publications, certification in Braille Formats, and support for prison braille programs. Together these efforts ultimately ensure that braille readers receive the highest quality materials available.

Through a variety of educational initiatives, we provide training and professional development for braille transcribers, teachers of students with visual impairments, paraprofessionals, prison braille programs, production facilities, and others involved in braille preparation.

By ensuring that braille readers have access to high-quality braille materials, our work ultimately supports literacy, education, employment, and independence.
