Hello,

In the Rulebook, I’m looking  at 10.11.6, which says we can alter the usual form of a word because of the addition of a prefix or formation of an unhyphenated compound word. But can we alter the usual form of a word if the usual groupsign can’t be used for other reasons?

The text I am working on is:

[list item begin]Congenital

There is no space after the closing bracket, so the CON contraction can’t be used. In this case, is it ok to use the ONG contraction?

Hi Greta,

The examples in 10.11.6 and 10.8.1 seem to indicate the (ong) contraction can be used in this situation. There’s nothing to say that the rule changes based on an alphabetic or non-alphabetic character preceding (con).
