Hello.  I’m confused how to handle words that replace math shape items (ray, angle, triangle, etc.). If I want to braille words in place of geometric shapes such as “triangle ACD equals triangle DEF”, what is the rule regarding words before a letter combination like I used the word triangle? I’m feeling really mixed up by the materials I have and I’ve looked through the Guidelines and I can’t find it.  Do you know what section of the Guidelines covers this? What if the geometric term is plural (e.g. “Triangles ACD, DEF, and XYZ are all right triangles.”)?

Hello Cheri,

Thank you for your question. You are touching on a frustrating aspect of Nemeth w/UEB transcriptions.

The rules governing code-switching and when to use them can be found in Rule 4 of the Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation 2022. Further explanation can be found in AN INTRODUCTION TO BRAILLE MATHEMATICS USING UEB WITH NEMETH A Course for Transcribers Second Edition, 2025—specifically Lessons 1 and 4.

For your example, the words you are using to represent the shapes would just be transcribed in UEB unless they were in the Nemeth code switches.
