In transcribing a solo flute part, I’ve encountered a situation where a rest is printed above a bar line with a fermata over the rest. The measures on either side of the bar line are complete. That is, the rest is not rhythmically part of either measure. The intention seems to be to emphasize the need to pause for the fermata. This situation occurs several times in the piece. How should I handle it in this nonfacsimile transcription?
Since the rest is not included in a measure, its presence is redundant. I think you are justified in ignoring it and just using the braille for a fermata over a barline. If you feel that it can’t be ignored, a TN would be OK.
