I have attached a page from a textbook we are formatting. Please see samples in box and exercises 8-11. Are these problems to be formatted as spatial problems? Aren’t horizontal lines over horizontal lines in the addition problems confusing to the student? Help?

So after much thought I have decided to present these fractions horizontally.

Example 8.

1      1

— + — =

3     3

4      2

— +  — =

7      7

It doesn’t work for mixed numbers.

Wow I have overworked thinking about this. I have settled on just presenting all fractions horizontal. The only ones I will present spatially are the ones that show something in the nominator and denominator such as

• 2×2     4
• —  — = —
• 3×2     6

Otherwise I will show

I think you’re onto a good thing here, Susan. If you haven’t already, please take a look at the discussion in the thread “Formatting fraction problems.”
